A native of a little town named Aquadale in Stanly County, Larry Russell moved to Rockingham at age 14 with his family in 1981. While attending Richmond Sr. High School, he began his career in funeral service working part-time at Carter Funeral Home washing cars and cleaning the funeral home. At the time textiles were still king in Richmond County, and upon graduation from high school he got a job at Burlington Industries and worked there for several years eventually becoming a weaver on the third shift. He met and married the former Lisa Sellars from Hamlet right about the time that textiles began to start shutting down in the area. Seeing a need to find more stable career for the good of his family, he made a decision to return to funeral service, which was his real calling, and began working part-time with Marks Funeral Home while still working full-time at Burlington and attending Richmond Community College as a full-time student to lay the groundwork for his educational requirements. He eventually transferred to the funeral service program at Fayetteville Technical Community College where he received his Associate in Applied Science degree in Funeral Service Education in 1997. He then served his required one year apprenticeship at Watson-King Funeral Home.
In 2001 he opened his first funeral firm, Sandhills Crematory in Aberdeen, expanding to found Sandhills Funeral Home in Rockingham with Bobby Lammonds in 2004, laying the groundwork for the purchase of Marks Funeral Home in 2007.
He and his family live in nearby Pinebluff, where his wife, Lisa, serves as a Magistrate in Moore County. She is also a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor, and for 8 years served as the Director of The Bethany House, a halfway house for recovering female addicts and alcoholics. She has taken classes at Fayetteville Technical Community College to pursue her funeral director's license. They have one son, Donald, who is at the time of this writing, in his 2nd year of college pursuing a business degree, and also works part-time at the funeral home when he is home from school.
Russell-Marks Funeral Home is truly a family-owned and operated funeral home, providing the personal committment that only an independant family-owned firm can.
